Most people think it improper to spank children, so I have tried other methods to control kids when they have one of ‘those moments.’
One that I found effective is for me to just take the child for a car ride and talk. It works even better with Beijing taxis.
Some say it’s the vibration from the car, others say it’s the time away from any distractions such as TV, Video Games, Computer, iPod, etc.
Either way, kids usually calm down and stop misbehaving after our car ride together. Eye to eye contact helps a lot too. Sometimes a bit difficult as often Beijing taxis have dirty windshields (I fail to understand how they can drive with that).
I’ve included a photo below of one of our sessions with a kid who tried to dismantle my model airplanes, in case you would like to use the technique. It also works well with the “Small Emperors” over here.
I thought differently…
On 22 January the Chinese Ministry of Health says, labels with smiling faces, neutral faces and sad faces must be visible on the front of doors of restaurants, hotels, swimming pools, bathhouses, and barber shops to reflect their hygiene situation.
Now I always thought that in the case of bathhouses and barber shops a smiling face indicated “girl is in” – neutral meant “girl busy” – sad meant “girl out”.
Confusing those bureaucrats!

Beware when the wife goes out…
Your wife decides to go out with her friends drinking and dancing….You’re okay with it, because you get to watch sports and play on the Internet all night…
You hear her stumble into bed around 4 and laugh knowing she’s going to have a monster hangover….
You wake up next morning and go outside to the family Volvo, which she used last night….
You sigh in relief because it’s all in one piece….
You circle the car looking for dents and find none….
But …. Wait a minute….
[obviously a role reversal here would be more credible!]
